There is a fine line between clever and stupid. But these jackholes have completely erased that line and declared themselves perpetually clever, or at least immune. Again, reporting from Minneapolis, things have abated a bit but they haven't gone away. You think you're in a haze (And I'm not trying to pull rank) but come hang out here and bring a fully charged phone and a whistle along with a willingness to get punched in the face for raising your hand and saying, "Hey, wait a second". Lasly Sir Michael keep an eye out for the White Breasted Nuthatch (it's my favorite and please don't tell the others). It can stand upside down while hanging on a tree. That defies physics and what seems possible. I find that vision inspiring and I'm sure you will as well.
It’s ok. I’m feeling rage full and organized a march next Tuesday. We balance each other out in this movement. Last week I felt numb and I’m sure someone else was doing something that offset me. It’s a marathon not a sprint.
V. Turner: you are exactly right. Keep marching and I just returned to phonebanking after a much needed break. We do what we can, when we can and help others along the path.
If subscribing will give you the confidence to retire from HIGNFY, I am disincentivised to subscribe. I love the show. Stand outside my place of business giving me the finger all you want. I'm used to that.
Thanks man, we all feel the same, but take solace that the bear has been awakened and a renewed popular grassroots resistance is sparked and building. Let's hope it inspires every county across the country and will Not Fade Away!
Well Michael, This was only slightly less depressing than the phone call I had this morning with my friend who just moved to France this week. I'll be at the taping tonight and I hope that the drive in gives you time to Finger things out
You've captured how effective the overwhelm is. I have greatly enjoyed your writing, Michael, which feels like a life raft of sorts in a flood of horrible news of seemingly biblical proportion. You may be even be building an ark.
They were smart enough to bluff their way back in, true. And I was a bit dumb- count me among those who could not believe he would be re-elected. But they are staggeringly incompetent- see Paul Krugman's post regarding how their stupidity just might save us- and they actually thought winning a pocketbook election (by 1%ish?) gave them a mandate to bomb, murder, and kidnap at will. Duuuumb.
We were dumb enough to get into this situation. We will get out of it because we are smarter. And kinder.
Who was it that said the U.S. always does the right thing after it's exhausted every stupid alternative?
This catastrophe will take generations to dig out from, if we ever do. But those bastards will not win in the long run. Or in November 2026.
Wow. Great piece.

You are providing some help to us. Like the birds, we are also creatures in need of some comfort, and you supply it.
Lord knows there is little comfort in the state of the country right now.

You provide comfort to this creature.

I agree with what you wrote, Michael as well as everyone in the comments.
Speaking with my coworkers, I muster what’s left of my passion to get them interested but the overwhelm is, well…overwhelming.
They throw their overworked hands in the air and say there’s nothing I can do
They can vote.
Existing as an empathetic person right now in this country is… hard. It’s been a particularly numbing week. Had to take a break from it all.
Thanks for writing and being an empathetic, funny, and creative person in the world and sharing it here and on the TV.
One foot in front of the other …

Hope the taping was fun.
This was our 4th taping and the be best one yet. Adam was amazing.

Feeling the same...just trying to stay within the "property line" as much as possible and dial the "amp" down to 1 or 2 while there...
1. They are far, far dumber than us.
2. Amanda Nelson- @amandasmildtakes on Insta. Practical advice on what we can- and perhaps more importantly, what they CAN'T- do.
3. I enjoy reading your stuff and watching HIGNFY. You and Amber Ruffin and Roy Wood Jr. play a role in keeping me sane through all this. Thank you.
A lot of people say they're the dumb ones. But what does that make us, since they control everything?

They’re dumber than we are. Much.
Don’t let them drown your empathy till it’s totally fatigued and shut down, give yourself a break and come back
Thank you for writing this , awesome read
