The summer malaise seems to be fully upon me, which ought not be terribly shocking considering I have yet to recover from my spring malaise, which followed the winter and autumnal versions of the same.
We didn’t put on swimsuits but it was wonderful to see you and I’m grateful we all overcame our malaise to sit in the shade together for a few hours. 💗
Jesus Christ I can relate. This is my life. And I struggle with addiction so this non stop malaise is literally killing me. I've been doing ketamine treatment last 3 months (inpatient, monitored, not like Elon...) and it's helped a little but even that can't get me to do the things I know I still love and enjoy. So I spend everyday miserable and drunk and furious with myself I'm not making music or content at the moment or seemingly anymore. I'd love a reach out, but that's asking a lot. I just have a VERY DARK history of depression and I don't wanna go back to the days I pretty much every 3 months tried to do you know what to myself (I call it "the long. blink"). That ended a couple years ago, but I was involuntarily hospitalized 10 occasions (forgot my punch card 10th time, was gonna get a t-shirt that said "I tried to kill myself and all I got was this stupid shirt" 🤪). Thankfully a dark and abstract sense of humor can help in plenty of moments. You're such a huge hero to me and inspiration for my own comedy content. I hope we both feel better soon.
I will note that the rest of the nation has been getting a dose of what Texans and other southerners have dealt with forever in terms of heat and humidity. The recent heat domes that have visited the east coast give y’all who don’t believe in air conditioning as a natural human right a taste of Texas.
It won’t be cooler here til maybe November.
There’s an old saw…”It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity.
You are not alone. The seasonal malaise…every season for the last I don’t know how many seasons. Old friends are a great remedy, reminiscing about the days where life was simpler and seemingly more fun.
It's called anomy and it's distinct from depression, basically sheer exhaustion with everything. . I have been feeling it too. I always hated the summer but now every year it's hotter and I have come to truly detest it.
Back when I was training for Backcountry treking I would go for long hikes wearing ankle weights with bricks in my backpack. I'm thinking that perhaps weighted pants would have been a much better solution had only I thought of it. As that noted philosopher Carly Simon once said "now that I'm old with debts and regrets" It's too late to develop a fully deployable pair of weighted pants that might take Internet commerce by storm and change my very existence. So thanks for that I guess...
I’m one month out from back surgery, so I should feel entitled to a bit of sloth. Instead, I feel guilty that I’m not doing more to preserve Democracy. I’m forbidden to bend, lift or twist, but I could be phone banking or writing to my various elected representatives. I SHOULD be doing those things.
This one hits home big time. Been feeling the same way; have dealt with depression for years and have it more or less in manageable shape, but this malaziness is something a little extra. My pet theory is it is the dread and slog of marching toward November and wondering if we'll find a way to start digging ourselves out of the shit we've been swimming in for years, or if the country is going to double down on shit swimming. Hope and dread, and not in equal measure.
I'm working every day and its been crazy busy. Wait wait, that's not it. My industry is slow , slow. Thank goodness I have a puppy that wakes me up to go outside to pee early in the morning. I forced myself not to go home and back to bed. This morning it was 6 AM and there wasn't a coffee shop open in my neighborhood. Oh well thanks for letting me vent.
I'm considering cutting-and-pasting your entire piece, changing the poolside/swim suit reference to jeans/hanging out in Sally's backyard, and posting it on my 'stack with only one feeble footnote revealing that, save for that single detail, the entire piece is plagiarized. But true! but true!
I suffer from summer seasonal affective disorder. I always have. I detest summers. The heat. The bugs. The clamminess of humidity makes me sick. I do not like more than 9 hours of sunshine. As a native of the Deep South, I have had to live with this for 68 of my 75 years. And, no, no Southerner truly gets accustomed to it. The only weirdos I hear praising it are transplants from North of the Mason-Dixon line. My family and friends hate it. We do not like ourselves, much less others in this weather. Malaise is the operative word. With the horrible state of my country and the world, this oppressive heat and weight of the wet air is far worse. My skin hates the sun. Too much Nordic heredity coursing through my veins.
Please, autumn, come hither. Maybe the midterms will lighten the weight. Maybe.

Love you brother,

You are not alone!
( PS pigs are wonderful animals)
Oh man this so perfectly captured my own state of malaise. Bravo, sir. I hope the pool party wasn’t too unbearable. Stay strong.💪

Nowadays, it’s both.
You realize you’ve been talking about this, and I’ve been reading and agreeing, since 11/24, eh?
That’s too long.

How early is too early to be in my pajamas?

I’m in the boat with you. “How soon can I take a nap?” is my usual first thought upon awakening ….
Yes! at least you have realized you *can* change out of the weighted pants, at least for a while. Ask yourself why.
