I've kept a Clive James quotation on my bulletin board for years, “Those who lack humor are without judgment and should be trusted with nothing.” Humor is a complex matter, as you know.

So when you wrote "he’s never made a recognizable joke in his life, which is the subject for another essay" my first thought was get to it, Michael!

Well sir, another excellent essay.

However, I cannot believe a man of your great knowledge, intelligence and generally high acumen doesn't recall how all of this was TOTALLY explained years ago by Ms. Kelly Anne Conway on numerous fox talk shows.

These are "alternative facts", Michael.

Had you paid closer attention to the Trump Dynasty, er, um, I mean Presidency, you would also recall that the true believers are the only folks who know the true meaning of "covfefe".

I am sure there will be an edited version of this fine journalism absolving that felon coming from you soon, that incorporates the defense of "alternative facts" on his dog whistles to his hoi polloi

And no, he does not give one fuck about anyone but himself.

Great piece, Michael.

As each year passes, I can't believe how close we're coming to Mike Judge's Idiocracy, Crocs & all. It was supposed to be an insightful joke, not a prophecy. But here we are.

WWE, I am also reminded, all too well, of the much harsher "Don't Look Up."

We are there as well. Jonah Hill and all.

And the fact that the people in attendance lapped it up just tells you everything you need to know about them. It’s a cult. But I will never, ever understand why anyone would fall enamoured with that disgusting, obviously moronic waste of carbon.

Exactly. He really likes himself and he really wants other people to like him. He needs to feel very important, but even having the most important job in the world was not enough to fill that need. He craves power and adoration and loyalty and it does not seem to matter who falls to the wayside in that quest. The problem with running this country as a business is that real people live and die based on the words the President says. The stakes are quite a bit higher than the contents of office snack machine, or the PTO policy.

But, I'm preaching to the choir. His followers vote against their own best interests and dismiss actions and statements that would immediately vilify any other candidate because to them, this is about something much bigger than one man. He represents a Biblical influence on a sinful world and a chance to turn this nation away from the wicked wokeness and into a Christian Nationalistic society. He is a chess piece that is too important to lose because the game is in its final moves.

So they know, deep down, that he does not care about them. We all know he does not care about anyone but himself. To the left, that is a bad thing. To the neo-right, it is a cross to bear in order to get the outcome they believe is Biblically foretold.

Excellent essay, as always, Michael. It occurs to me that "we don't care about him," as in the actual person. He's become a symbol that is interpreted by people who can see it meaning power and wealth for themselves. Since I can't believe anyone that actually listens to him would support him, no one is listening. They have invented someone they believe in, that is diametrically opposed to someone they don't listen to, either, but don't like on principle because he's the "left."

It reminds of Guyana Punch. Jim Jordan. They are true believers.

Life is not without irony. The mass of his non-educated, financially disabled voter base have and would do far better under democratic administrations and their policies . And they are scared for the future of the white man and his diminishing power in the world.

I'm enjoying the mental image of the old fool going down with the ship, waiting to be electrocuted, only to discover he never actually had a choice: there is no electrocution from the boat battery. And here comes the shark...
