I was talking about exactly this with a friend a few years ago. We both agreed that he put voice to some of our darker impulses (particularly with respect to sex and women) that allowed us to confront our inherent shittiness in a way that allowed us to overcome it without shame or guilt. It was incredibly disheartening that he apparently couldn't do so himself.
