Beautifully written! Brought some tears to my eyes. I'm recently new to this whole dad experience with two little ones, so I'm in early stages but I can fully understand it when you talk about seeing the world through fresh eyes.
It's a magically thing to experience everything alongside someone who is going through life's moments for the first time around, along with all the sights and smells and little miracles that I now take for granted. Waking to new fallen snow, fireflies at night, the moon as it seems to follow you through the sky, learning how to use your imagination again. There are small things that I think we lose touch with as we grow that are true miracles of being alive here on this planet.
A wonderful essay! Choked me up a bit, especially your piece in This American Life. You became the father you wished you’d had and I’m certain you’re a great dad. Happy Father’s Day to you and all the Dads out there!
I loved this piece. And about doing your best as a parent: I heard a podcast ages ago where someone said you can do your best as a parent but by the time your kid is 26 they’ll be telling their therapist that you totally fucked them up. So, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. But maybe a good response is if they’re smart enough to know that they need a therapist, you did a good job
Love this… sums it up beautifully (tho I don’t mind a present now and then. This year I got an oyster shucker). Thank you Michael, and happy Father’s Day!
Are you also explaining being a husband, by chance? 😳
Asking for a friend.
I loved this. And the piece from This American Life.
yep
Beautifully written. I think the same applies to grandfathers too.

Hoo boy: just listened to your This Am Life piece, which I’d missed, and it is doing a number on me tonight. Well done.
Beautiful essay. Happy Father’s Day.

Isn't an oyster shucker just a butter knife?
Thanks for ruining my Father’s Day.
Enjoy your oysters, I guess.
