Beautifully penned piece, Michael. Gives one much to contemplate. “Memorial Day is just Thanksgiving by another name” is a marvelously composed closer. Hope your Memorial Day went well, and all in your house are hale and hearty.
It always captivates me when the words are written with the heart. Thank you Mr Black for this beautiful composition in sharing a part of your mind and life.
I think all of your sentiments are true and have value, honestly I do. My only question is, how do we approach/deal with the (I hesitate to say), evil and/or corrupt and oppressive entities that want to take control over others?
this especially: "Finally, as long as it’s Memorial Day, I’d like to take a moment to apply the holiday more broadly to remember the Ukrainians fighting for their country, and for the Israelis and Gazans suffering through their own horrendous war. Today is an American holiday, of course, but those fights are inextricably bound to us in ways both obvious and subtle."
Beautiful essay thank you. I have many of the same feelings as you about this holiday really about giving thanks. What was the recruiter’s response to your question about being gay? Was this before Clinton’s don’t ask don’t tell? Such a shameful time. Makes me think about another beautiful essay I read about Memorial Day https://open.substack.com/pub/luciantruscott/p/gay-pride-and-patriotism?r=ezt0e&utm_medium=ios

Absolute gold 🥇
This Memorial Day I salute Linda Carter and thank her for her service. Hal Linden also did his part in making the 1970s the sexy decade that it was.
These observations aside, agree wholeheartedly with your essay.

Hi Ian,

Truly Excellent.
