I live in Saint Paul and, unfortunately, the situation is probably even worse than you can imagine. I, personally, had two people tell me that ICE agents directly threatened them before Renee Nicole Good was shot. One person had their driver's license (along with their coworker they were driving to work) taken from them.
I know of various businesses that are closed because the staff are scared to go into the office or store.
Just on Sunday, if you saw the incident where a man was beaten unconscious at a Speedway gas station on Snelling Avenue, I arrived there just as the man was loaded into the vehicle. The crowd was about 30-40 people there confronting about 10-15 ICE agents who were heavily armed and looking like they were ready for war. These guys were clearly ex-military
Sunday afternoon, my wife and I followed an ICE vehicle to a parking lot of a local shopping center where they turned on their lights, blocked us in and attempted to enter the vehicle. The doors were locked and the windows up. They asked us to leave the vehicle and/or roll down the windows. We refused. (I do admit, I did not speak, but was giving them the middle finger the entire time). We said we had a right to be there and were going shopping.
They did return to their car after a few minutes but did not leave the area as they circled around us like vultures while we stayed in the lot. Eventually, they left.
To be blunt, this area feel like it is under occupation by an invading force. Specifically, the federal government. Even I, with the bleakest of gallows humor, have found it difficult, but not impossible, to joke around. I was at my synagogue board meeting last night, providing details on how to act if ICE shows up at our door. I said the door should never be opened, even if the prophet Elijah himself appears. Got a chuckle out of the rabbi. Small victories.
People need to know how bad it truly is here. Door to door searches ARE being conducted in certain neighborhoods. Observers ARE being threatened who try to stand up to ICE. These tactics are NOT kinda similar to authoritarian regimes, they are using the same playbook.

Anyone else feel like it's worth noting that so many are pointing out that these attacks by ICE are taking place 'in the suburbs'? To me, this sounds like 'you know, where WHITE people live OMG'.

A side effect of this horrific madness will be a negative economic impact to our communities. That is also an outcome the administration wants by sending agents into blue states.
Th alleged Medicaid fraud was alleged by a right-wing YouTuber then repeated at th highest levels of th federal government. Does anyone really believe that Somali immigrants figured out a way to get millions of dollars from our tattered, patchwork social safety net?
At least King Boreas is showing up next week to put the iron cold over the region. Don’t know if that helps or hurts, but wind chill usually scares out of towners not used to their nose hair freezing.
These thugs are getting away with choke holds, shooting people fearlessly, while police officers aren’t even allowed to draw a gun until things escalate. And even then, they’re supposed to shoot at a car tire , not a person in the car! Everything ICE is doing is illegal. What else would we expect from those who take theese jobs? They were either previously working border control, where their violent behaviors were rewarded, or they’re angry macho bigots who see this as fun.
Michael, keep chronicling all of this; we’ll need it for future generations(optimistically) to know the truth of this era.
