Ahhh, C’mon everybody rubbed one out last night. If you say you didn’t just to save face, we don’t believe you… I think if you don’t rub one out on New Year’s Eve it’s just plain weird. It’s a rite of passage, a way to end the year on a good note. To basically say to yourself “Hey, I Got Mine” and to then say Fuck Off to the old year!
Anyway, that’s enough talking about whacking it… I’m here to expound on the fact that there is real correlation with where we are as a country and society and the prophetic messages in popular culture, eg. classic tunes, movies, cartoons, etc.
The Bob Dylan song “Ballad Of A Thin Man” is definitely a prophetic song about the shit going nowadays. It sounds like a bunch of gibberish, but it actually means something about what’s really happening and nobody really knows what it is… Do ya understand? Yeah, that’s what I thought, and so did Dylan!
The movie Idiocracy is another work of art proving true the prophecy of current affairs, with the brain-dead half of our country that keeps stepping in the same pile of dogshit. It’s really happening, in fact our elected leaders are actually making President Camacho seem pretty damned capable. I’m just waiting for the day that some normal everyday product starts squirting out of our faucets and drinking fountains… maybe not an energy drink like Brawndo, but something like Starbucks Espresso or V-8 juice.
Then we’ve got all of our once trusted news sources either spewing doubt or defending the lies of a 34 count convicted felon, rapist and racist because they’re scared of him and his rich buddies pulling the plug on their breathing machines… I’m not talking about those fake news sources, and you know what I’m talking about, but the ones that we all used to turn to for the meat and potatoes, the real nitty-gritty of a story. They’re shitting all over the Old Guy in the White House to basically give another Old Guy a hall pass for all the weird ass shit he says or does to get him in The White House, because it’s “Good Copy” or for great ratings! Fucking Ridiculous!!!
So you see where I’m going here with this?
We basically just need to tune out of everything, stop paying attention to the nonsense going on, And Just Rub One Out… ✊🏼🥖🌶️🍆💦 👀
From my POV you were very optimistic. I do take comfort in your words, and will bookmark this post. "I can’t help but think there’s some underlying organization at play that we haven’t yet figured out." Indeed there is, but WHAT is it and WHEN is it?
We are at, or are close to a pivotal point in our evolution. It’s not hours or weeks away, but it’s coming soon. We are interconnected with one another and the planet we live on in ways that are physical and are scientifically provable. If a group of people got us on the moon before their were smart phones, there is no reason we cannot solve the issues that we think are always going to be around: there is plenty of food and clean water, clothing and shelter for all of humanity. We are smart enough to distribute and move supplies and construct infrastructure. If enough of us wanted this to happen, it would be do able. It would have happened decades ago. But there are people in the way, right? People who care more about power and money for themselves than quality and or duration of life for others. We have a small group making decisions that affect and hurt generations of people all over the world. That is just one example: belief systems, cultural norms, etc all seem insurmountable. The human mind has to evolve past self-preservation and move towards the preservation of humanity. And not just the humanity that looks like or believes like or votes like the person in the mirror. That quote, “I don’t know how to convince you to care about other people”? That’s our next step forward, and the growing pains are already deeply painful and saddening to experience.
This captures the heart of what I have been thinking as well. The world is on the brink of massive technological and sociological changes for which our advanced monkey brains are not well equipped to handle. But you cant fight the winds of change, you just have to center yourself in a way that you don't get swept away by them. I have started getting more spiritual and started meditating as my way of bringing myself back to earth when my anxieties about the climate changing and the incoming administration disaster threaten to overwhelm me. A steady dose of humor and conscious community is the rest of the antidote.
2025 is when we find out we haven't learned anything from the past, but sure know how to repeat the things that never worked just to prove our collective insanity. Thanks for your insights.
Rather than thinking of the new administration as an aberration, I’m choosing to look it as the natural outgrowth of a world in transition, a kind of species-wide puberty we all seem to have hit at the same time.

Rubbing one out for the win.

Puberty is supposed to be our transition from childish, selfish belligerence to some semblance of rational, functional adulthood.
We seem to be going in reverse.
We’ve become more Benjamin Button than Benjamin Franklin.

I appreciate your ability to be both utterly profound and ridiculous in the same heartbeat. Love to you from Denmark.
Kisses from America.
This is not your most inspiring or uplifting article, Michael, but you hit a few points squarely.
After all. In 2025 those stupid New Year's Eve eyeglasses don't even make sense anymore.

This is right on the nose:

Zits and all
Glad I joined your substack, and looking forward to your commentary, side notes, and bon mots in 2025!
In all fairness, Andy Cohen can get people to say the wildest things. That’s why he’s so fun to watch!
Yep. Something is indeed in play, brother.
