Thank you for the fine Corinthian turkey and the lovely reminder about all there is to be thankful for. Also for the shoutout to us readers, who actually keep this place up and running. J/K, weβre mediocre at best.
Amen to road trips and good people. I drove from Colorado Springs to Montreal and back. One day short of Colorado Springs in Colby, Kansas, I discovered a backpack containing critical medications went missing. Upon arrival in Colorado Springs, Amanda in Kansas contacted me to say she found the backpack in the middle of the highway. She shipped it to me and everything in the backpack was there and intact. Thank you Amanda and thank you Michael. If my backpack fell out of a plane, we might have a different ending to the story. Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels.
Lest you forget, American Thanksgiving has brought the consumerist derangement of Black Friday to the world. I'm an expat in Eastern Europe, and even here there are Black Friday sales everywhere. It only started about 6 or 7 years ago, and 99.99% of people here have no idea as to what this "blek fraidey", as they pronounce it, refers to or why it falls on a specific Friday. When I enlighten them, they're always a bit disappointed, for some reason.
"If youβve never taken a cross-country road trip, I recommend you do so at least once."
I've done this and I wholeheartedly cosign this recommendation. Also I'm thankful I found your newsletter, for your perspective, humanity, and humor. I've seen you in various roles, but I think this might be my favorite.
Me too! Iβm thankful for the very reasonably priced job retirement counseling, psychiatric treatment and coping that your writing has given me. Youβre firing on all eight, as Steve McQueen might have once said!
Lovely thoughts on my favorite holiday, mostly because it's non-denominational and doesn't center getting drunk. I am grateful to you for your thoughtful essays, and especially for your podcast "Obscure" which has been a balm for my soul over the years.
This's the fucking STUFF! elegiac, but joyful. sprawling, but concise. thank you for writing it.
and hope you had a lovely turkey day.
