"It's also Martin Luther King Jr. Day [today]. I have been a lifelong admirer of the man because he chose to meet violence with love. Violence need not be physical. One can attack with words just as readily as fists. One can attack with declarations, orders, and memorandum. One can be violent in attitude. One can be violent in thought. King explored the possibilities of love as an oppositional force to violence. Love need not be – and should not be – passive. Love is most powerful when it is active and directed. Love is patient and kind, sure, but it can also be fucking urgent and powerful. [Today] might be a good day to take a page from King’s book and choose that kind of love."
Yes, tomorrow is Monday. I know that some people don’t like Mondays, and I’m guilty of that dislike if I drink too much on Sunday and have to go to work.
But, I do like Mondays when there’s a National Holiday like we’re having tomorrow to honor The Great Martin Luther King Jr.
He was an amazing human being that promoted peaceful protests and equality for all. We definitely need more high quality humans like him leading the way for our nation.
They truly don’t make men of substance like that anymore.
Anyway I get the day off of work. Who doesn’t love Three-Day Weekends? Especially when it’s a holiday to honor someone like MLK or a great former deceased President. Or how about Veterans or In Memorial of our fallen soldiers. I’m all for them.
Now something else is happening tomorrow as well… It’s National Cheese Lovers Day!
Oh C’Mon, who doesn’t Love Cheese? I Love Cheese! 🧀 Call me a rat in a vat when I get around cheese… I once ordered a build your own omelette at a restaurant one time, and added Cheddar cheese, Monterrey Jack cheese, American cheese and had them drizzle melted Nacho cheese all over it. It was one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever eaten! Yeah, I know that we shouldn’t be eating that much cheese all the time, and I don’t, but at least once a year we should be able to indulge and eat a Chunk Of Cheese the size of a car battery like George Costanza did on Seinfeld.
Gotta Love MLK and Cheese!!!
And with those two things the only two events happening tomorrow, It Should Make For A Stupendous Monday!
I might even go have a build your own omelette breakfast to celebrate…
I am eternally grateful for the amazing friends I have made over the past year. They are extraordinarily intelligent, talented people, each with stories to tell and passion to tell it. I look forward to seeing their future projects, and continuing my own work with friends like them.
I’m watching my young granddaughters tomorrow, since there’s no school due to MLK Jr. day. We’re going to visit a wild animal care facility. But almost anything is better than watching what will be broadcast all over tomorrow. Even a tooth extraction would be better. Thanks for your excellent advice and recipe!
Thanks, Dr. Black, for all of this wisdom and practical advice. No licensed psychotherapist could have done better.
I hope your followers here try the risotto suggestion. Leisurely prep work, slow simmering, soothing stirring, and sips of wine on the side are always a zen-like experience.
This is lovely Michael. Beautifully written and the sentiment and the deep meaning behind it come through brilliantly without needing blunt specifics, and I really appreciated that. Happy Monday everyone.
Toulouse is my favorite smaller city in France. It’s Roman and Parisian at the same time. You can turn the corner and feel like you’re in a completely different city. There are some great restaurants out of converted wine cellars. My fave is Les Caves de la Maréchale
If the Arctic blast doesn’t impede me, attending a screening and discussion of Selma w a local NAACP leader. Otheriwse, doing as my mother taught me, yelling expletives at the television screen while viewing political events 😉😘
"Maybe you can throw on a Spotify classical playlist while you cook a big Monday roast for loved ones. A spatchcocked chicken, perhaps, or a leg of lamb."
With all this talk of meat, did France break you of your vegetarianism?
I’m still pretending that nothing has changed so I will just mention that ‘Manic Monday’ was written by Prince.
dear michael,
i love this:

You may not want to come back… :o(

If I watch anything it will be something about Martin Luther King, Jr. Enjoy France!

“There will be a Monday tomorrow and there will be a Monday every day for the next four years. And even beyond that.”
Hmm. Was there a typo in there, or is my sleep-deprived brain resisting some fabulous dry irony?
No, definitely a typo.

Lovely
I feel better already. Thanks.

Did I not include a recipe for butternut squash risotto?!? Sheesh.
It’s not just any Monday. It’s MLK Jr Day.
