A while back I attempted to compliment your writing by saying something like “I liked you as a performer but..” I regret that. I should have just said that you were a fine writer and left it at that. Apologies

"well-off whites who will stick it to the poors if it means they keep an extra thirty-five cents."

Well, that 35 cents is the difference between getting regular milk and chocolate milk. Would you really try to keep them from their chocolate milk???

Thanks Michael, well said and making great sense. Feels like the country that I grew up in and even more like the one that my children grew up in which was an a caring beautiful place. My wife and I now in our 80’s live in a very small, quiet neighborhood of 17 homes. Unfortunately, I only know the names of the 6 of these neighbors. Part of the problem is possibly a change from the Midwest to the Southern state where we now live. I also think that neighborhood friendships are less common now.

BTW you are somewhat of a neighbor, you in Savannah and us in Summerville, SC. Welcome to the SOUTH!

The world needs some peace and quiet. People need to live real life instead of fearing everything and everyone all the time. Thank you for expressing that!

Wonderful writing, Michael! What a party the DNC has been putting on this week: joy, hope, optimism, inclusion! And inviting Never Trumper Republicans to speak about patriotism above party, it’s all so on point and what we as a country need right now. Neighbors looking out for each other. Keep up the great writing , Michael!

Great piece.

I have long said that I don’t need policy details from any presidential candidate. The chances of any specific policy being implemented are very low. I just want to know what their priorities are. What are they going to work on if elected?

Being optimistic feels pretty good, doesn’t it?

Yes oh yes.

This is fantastic, Michael.

FWIW - I think this is one of the best political pieces you've written. The metaphor of Chicken Little is spot on.

"We don’t need perfection. We need competence."

Exactly this - progress doesn't happen overnight, but rolling it back sure can.

Michael, the difference between today and two months ago is that we now have HOPE.

Great writing.

The sky is always falling in Donald Trump’s world. Murderers and knaves wait around every street corner, dark hordes are invading the border and burning down our cities, the streets run with the blood of Christians forced to use they/them pronouns. It’s American carnage out there, people, and only one flabby crook/rapist can fix it.

Also this:

We can expect competent foreign policy leaders to manage our complicated relationships with allies and adversaries, perhaps with fewer love notes to Kim Jung-Un.

The ever-trumpers seem firmly entrenched and love wallowing in their misery, but for perhaps for the hopefully more-than-a-few who would like to embrace a positive future, there is a voting alterative. It's amazing how a different lens from the dems have shown the republicans to be petty and small, ugly and silly -- as you said, going from scary monster to ridiculous caricature. Vance isn't helping, either. How tired is the old line, "the press is evil?" (which I was called once, actually, by a republican congressman, in a class of 8th graders, while reporting on his PR visit there). I am referring to Vance's latest gaff where he asked a deli owner to give him bad food to serve to the press core. Really, dude? Just double down on the fact your party hates freedoms of any kind.

The world would be a much better place if we all just had kindness and grace for one another. Nothing lasting and real can be built with fear and hate, only with love and radical empathy for your fellow man. We are all in this together.
