I’m not here to pretend that I know what will happen or that I know who the running mate should be. But I am here to say that I know with 100% certainty that Kamala’s campaign soundtrack must be Get on Your Feet by Gloria Estèfan.

I too was sad and relieved simultaneously. I am glad they didnt drag this out and everyo e has rallied around Kamala. Fuck the pundits who are pushing fot an open convention, they just want a spectacle and for Trump to win. Stopping the fascists and preserving Democracy is more important than their ratings, jesus christ.

Remember - we sometimes don’t recognize the best of ours , like Joe and Jill Biden, til they’ve left the presidency . I’ve been thinking of jimmy and Roslyn Carter. It’s always been Obama this , Michelle Obama that, HRC, Sanders-anyone but the Bidens who had lived in the shadows of great ones. They’ll even now potentially be obscured or erased by a greater historic moment. I hope that he lives a long time last this , but that I live long enough to witness his passing and I hope that the procession we see will be glorious.

Thank you for clarifying my feelings of both sadness and relief—and maybe a bit of excitement about the new, re-energized race? Joe Biden pulled us out of the Trump morass and brought us back to some normalcy and hope. No, he was not a perfect President, there is much to be unhappy about in his tenure. But under the circumstances, I don’t know how much better we could hope for. Time to put our faith in Kamala Harris, we need her to carry on. Forward.

I liked you as a performer; but this is really impressive and clarifying. Thank you

Harris can't win. Dems need new candidate and new VP. It's not up to Biden to simply annoit someone, it still needs to be a competitive process.

I tend to agree … I think this is exactly why Biden’s departure was so agonizingly slow. It is a problem - I voted for HRC- it’s a difficult road I now realize . Recently , I watched cnn interviews of people on the street in Atlanta- this was before yesterday. They were strictly interviewing Black voters. One set, a couple of professional women at lunch , were asked sev ?s one of them was if they would prefer to see Harris at the top of the ticket. They both fairly immediately responded , in a more animated way- “well, no , because of racism and sexism. And the sexism is worse than the racism is this country.”

I want a Harris presidency - and I really felt that the best way to achieve that would’ve been to keep the Biden Harris ticket… win the election and then turn it over. It’s clear to me now- that was probably what others more knowing than I felt too- Biden and Harris, advisors etc. in a sense, the claims that people were in on a “cover up” were right - it was A strategy that they were not able to carry through all the way.

Anyone who thinks this is a preferred way to go isnt acknowledging that even Biden and Harris didn’t go with it as plan A. There’s a reason for that😉

No cover up. No secret plans. Biden and Harris just aren't that close!

Biden should have kept his word to be the bridge. Silly man.

His age was an issue for voters in 2020, Dems have had four years to plan for succession. All of this could have been avoided.

All the same, if Dems win in November, Biden should be given full credit for twice preventing Trump being back in the Whitehouse. Once by stepping up, once by stepping down. That would be an impressive legacy for anyone.

Whatever happens, he's made history.

Who is it that is on the fence currently and *could* be won over to vote Democrat in November, but is unlikely to do so if the nominee is Harris? What demographic are you really talking about here, and why do you think you have your finger so fully on the pulse of this ignorant and irresponsible sliver of the population?

Your active voters put Trump in the Whitehouse in 2016, more than half of them want to put him back there. Ignorant and irresponsible, yep! I don't know which pulse you're taking. 😂

Harris is second in line for the Presidency right now. She’s the most qualified for the job and is the logical choice if we want to avoid a full on clusterfuck of legal challenges from the right, which they’re just drooling for the chance of. Nominating the current VP as the successor is hardly the same as anointing one. But that’s just my opinion and what do I know?

Harris is next in line for the current elected government, not a future government.

4600 delegates will decide. Maybe they'll think America will elect a woman, for once, maybe they won't. We'll see what those decision makers think come August.

(Just about every other country has already had one or more female leaders, so the rest of the world wouldn't view it as historic and amazing if America finally catches up.)

Truly excellent. You captured not only the enthusiasm that is capturing the party and country but your political bio of Biden was thoughtful, correct and, in parts, tragic. Well done. God, though, if Bernie Sanders thinks this is his year, all bets are off.

I have all of the feelings and none of the feelings at the moment. I respect President Biden for stepping aside for the sake of the party and the country. I have faith in Kamala Harris and will happily support her no matter who she chooses as a VP running mate. I also just really don't like that Trump can show signs of cognitive decline and no one in his party says any thing about him stepping aside. I know why, of course: he is their "cult-like" leader, and they will look past anything to get him back in power so they can forward their agenda. An agenda, that, by the way, is terrifying. I do think that a person of color, and that person being female, beating a racist, misogynist con artist would feel really, really good. It would be justice. And I'm all about that tasty, tasty justice.

Crying very surprised tears. I'm ashamed of the way that man was bullied, by everyone. I ❤️ Joe.

Hearing the news was like a gut punch, but also I felt a little relieved (in a scared and anxious way, if that's possible). I'm glad it happened with 100ish days left before the election. That's plenty of time for people to get behind a new candidate. My fear is people will find reasons not to join in solidarity. As Democrats, we often put principal over other solidifying factors. I do worry. I'll do my best to be on the side of making sure we win. Getting it done. Avoiding a complete disaster. I'm glad a decision was finally made, no more wondering will he, won't he. It is too bad, because I share many of the same sentiments you expressed about him. And, I genuinely felt sad when I heard the news.

I’m not putting effort into helping a party that clearly doesn’t respect me or care about my opinion.

Expand full comment

What party are you talking about? It can't be the Dems, who are accused of listening to too many voices, like a big noisy family at the dinner table - open to everyone's issues and shouting it out.

The MAGA party goes to their national convention with no platform other than whatever Trump says. That's a fact, not an exaggeration. They respect and fall in line with one man.

Paul, please do more reading and listening to intelligent opinions within the Democratic Party, and perhaps your anger will abate in time. And consider the alternative.

Gotta take a stand at some point.

Paul, I don’t know you and I went to your page and you haven’t posted anything so I couldn’t learn anything about you but I’m sorry that you don’t feel respected. I’m a Democrat and I try to respect all people and I want everyone to be treated fairly and for everyone to have an equal vote.

We all get to have our opinions. You are sounding like one of those folks who, if they don’t win, are taking their equipment and going home. Please get over it. In a democracy, differing opinions should be voiced. All cannot be honored.
